Neratovice to have the world's first church built with 3D printing
Neratovice, October 1, 2026 – The construction of the new Holy Trinity Church and the Cardinal Josef Beran Community Center is rewriting the history of modern construction. Rising in Neratovice is the world's first church whose construction will use the unique technology of 3D concrete printing on a scale never seen before. In addition to the tower and the rectory, the main nave of the church will also be printed. In total, hundreds of unique 3D-printed elements will be produced. The general contractor is the international construction group HSF System, part of the investment holding PURPOSIA Group. The investor is the Neratovice Community Center Foundation. The architectural design is by Zdeněk Fránek. In May 2026, the President of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel, visited the church construction site together with the Archbishop of Prague, Stanislav Přibyl.
The first underground floor of the church has now been completed, including the foundation structures and part of the tower structures. The ceiling slab above this floor and the foundation structure of the future rectory are also finished. The underground level will house the main community hall with its own entrance and facilities.
“We are overjoyed and proud that the church in Neratovice will be the first building of its kind in the world built using the unique technology of 3D concrete printing. The underground part has already taken shape, and we can start building what will define the character of the whole site from the outside. Now comes the moment when the church will begin to rise quickly before our eyes, and we are very much looking forward to it,” says Peter Kováč, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Neratovice Community Center Foundation and Parish Administrator of Neratovice.
From underground to above ground: the main nave is next
Above ground, the main nave of the church will begin to rise, with both its outer and inner shells created by 3D printing.
“For us, it is essential that 3D printing technology can turn the architectural design into a real building without our having to simplify its organic shapes. In conventional construction, walls curved like this would mean a great deal of custom formwork – its fabrication, installation and subsequent removal. Here, we can prepare the geometry directly in the digital model and produce the individual parts from it,” says Tomáš Kosa, CEO of the HSF System construction group.
The structure of the main nave will consist of precisely manufactured elements that will serve as an exact mold and permanent formwork. They will then be connected with reinforcement and completed with reinforced concrete ribs and ring beams. There will be space for thermal insulation between the individual shells. The inner surface of the printed elements will create the distinctive texture of the walls and help with the interior acoustics.
“Each of the approximately 870 elements will have its own precisely defined place in the structure. So these are not identical, mass-produced blocks, but a set of original components created for a specific position in the building. Their precision will be crucial, especially as the curved walls are gradually joined together and connected at the higher levels of the building,” adds Martin Janoušek, site manager at the HSF System construction group.
The technology will be used on site in three different ways
HSF System is implementing the technology together with its subsidiary Coral Construction Technologies. The company offers its own unique solution for 3D concrete printing. By modifying the properties of concrete with admixtures, it can process the material to meet the needs of printing as well as the requirements of the specific structure. The Neratovice project will use 3D concrete printing in several technologically distinct modes.
“For the main nave of the church, we will produce individual, precise elements that will then be installed in the structure. For the tower, the printed blocks will be completely filled with concrete after installation. This difference relates to the future use of the tower. Its outer side will serve as a publicly accessible climbing wall, so the structure must be massive and strong enough to anchor the climbing holds. A third approach will be used for the rectory. It will be built directly on the construction site by our construction robot, which will print the structure in real time,” explains Tomáš Vránek, CEO of Coral Construction Technologies.
The use of 3D printing is closely linked to the architectural design of the church. Zdeněk Fránek designed the building as a striking organic structure with vaulted ovals, smooth transitions and curved lines. That is why, even before construction itself began, a 1:1 test sample of these structurally complex curved walls was built directly on the site. It verified the feasibility and stability of the proposed structural system. It will remain on site even after the construction is completed, as a reminder of the technology used to build the church.
A place for worship, culture and community life
The new center will expand the possibilities of the local parish, which serves thirteen municipalities. The concept envisions a complex that will not be a closed space intended only for worship. It will include clubrooms, classrooms, a gallery, exhibition spaces, a café and a multipurpose community hall. The tower will offer a climbing wall.
Plans include cultural and social events, lectures, educational programs, concerts, weddings, baptisms and leisure activities for the general public.
“We want to create a place that will be alive every day. The church will be its natural center, but alongside it there will be a number of spaces for people from the town and the surrounding area. We believe that this very combination of spiritual, cultural, social and community functions is one of the greatest values of the whole project,” says Peter Kováč.
The first phase is to be completed in 2027, the entire complex a year later
The construction, which the President of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel, also visited in May 2026 together with the Archbishop of Prague, Stanislav Přibyl, is divided into two main phases. The first includes the shell construction of the main part of the church and, according to the current schedule, is to be completed in mid-2027. The second phase will see the completion of the tower and the rectory, followed by the interior and exterior finishing work on the entire complex. The full opening of the new church and community center is planned for the end of 2028.
The total budget of the project is approximately CZK 250 million excluding VAT. The investor is the Neratovice Community Center Foundation, established by the Archdiocese of Prague.
“Our funding is based on multiple sources. In addition to proceeds from the sale and development of church land, the project is supported by individual donors, patrons and other contributors. Approximately CZK 115 million has been secured so far. The public can also take part in the funding. The fundraising campaign continues, and contributions can be made on the kostelneratovice.cz website. We are also considering the option of donating a specific building element,” adds Marek Matocha, member of the Board of Trustees of the Neratovice Community Center Foundation.
Neratovice Community Center Foundation
The Neratovice Community Center Foundation (hereinafter the Foundation) was established on November 1, 2021, for the purpose of: building the church and rectory of the Roman Catholic Parish of Neratovice (hereinafter the Parish), including financing their construction; supporting the activities of the Parish, including financing the operation of the church and rectory and of the community center run by the Parish, and financing the costs of operating, repairing, renovating and maintaining the church and rectory belonging to the Parish and the community center run by the Parish. The founder of the Foundation is the Archdiocese of Prague. By establishing the Foundation, we are following on historically from the time when churches in the Archdiocese of Prague were built by the people under the auspices of the state-supported structure of foundations. This step allows parishioners to have a greater share in our work, as the Foundation is legally separate from the Archdiocese of Prague. The majority of the members of the Board of Trustees and the Supervisory Board are parishioners from Neratovice, which gives them a real opportunity to shape the Foundation's activities while also taking on a greater share of the responsibility.
